CVS Pharmacy Inc. agreed to an $8 million settlement Feb. 12 amid allegations that prescription drugs were illegally distributed at certain CVS locations in Maryland in violation of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA).
CVS acknowledged in the settlement agreement that certain of its Maryland locations distributed drugs—including oxycodone, fentanyl and hydrocodone—from 2008 to 2012 in a manner that didn’t comply with CSA provisions. Allegations included failures of pharmacists to ensure controlled substances were being distributed for legitimate medical reasons.
