CMS Revises Process for Making National Coverage Determinations

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services in an Aug. 2 notice updated the process it uses for opening, deciding, or reconsidering national coverage determinations (NCDs).

The notice establishes the procedures for requesting an NCD or reconsideration of an existing NCD, CMS said. The agency said that based on its experiences with the current NCD process, it will establish a new procedure to be used in circumstances in which it has previously issued an NCD, but subsequently determined that the NCD is no longer needed.
