California’s Privacy Law Will Cost Health-Care Data Managers

Companies that collect and manage health-care data and aren’t covered under federal health privacy law can expect added compliance challenges and extra costs as states begin to beef up their consumer privacy protections.

States are creating their own data privacy laws that impose stringent penalties on these companies for privacy violations. California is leading the way with a privacy law that goes into effect in January and covers all consumer data, not just health-related information. States from Rhode Island to Hawaii are considering their own proposed legislation.
