California Moves to Let Undocumented People Over 50 Get Medicaid

California residents over age 50 would be newly eligible for the state’s Medicaid program regardless of immigration status under a budget plan that cleared the Legislature Monday.

The action sets the stage for up to $1.3 billion in funding to cover about 240,000 more undocumented Californians under the state’s Medi-Cal program by 2025. The Assembly approved spending for the change, 57 to 15, and the state Senate approved it 30 to 8 as part of a $195.5 billion fiscal 2021–2022 general fund budget bill (A.B. 128), which now heads to Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) for his consideration.
