Doctors who contract with a public hospital can be sued for criminal self-dealing, the California Supreme Court ruled June 26 (People v. Superior Court (Sahlolbei), Cal., S232639, 6/26/17).
A unanimous court cleared the way for a first-of-its-kind prosecution of a surgeon under contract with a rural Riverside County public health district for a scheme in which the doctor, Hossain Sahlolbei, allegedly pocketed tens of thousands of dollars from contracts he negotiated for other doctors.
