California HIE Program Funding Falls Short, Cal eConnect CEO Says

OAKLAND, Calif.—Implementation of statewide health information exchange (HIE) technologies in California could be hamstrung by the insufficient amount of money provided for the project by the federal government, the project leader for California’s HIE efforts told BNA Nov. 9.

The Cal eConnect Chief Executive Officer Carladenise Armbrister Edwards said the current $38.8 million in federal funding and matching state dollars “is enough to stimulate and respond, it is not enough to sustain” the state’s HIE efforts far beyond their development.
