Biomet Appeals $21 Million Judgment in Hip Implant Case

Biomet Inc. and affiliated companies are appealing to the Eighth Circuit after a federal trial court upheld a $21 million award to a woman alleging serious harm from Biomet M2a-Magnum hip prostheses, filings show.

Mary Bayes had both her hips replaced with Biomet’s M2a-Magnum implants in 2008.

The prostheses caused tissue damage, requiring seven additional hip implant surgeries. Bayes also has dislocated a hip 12 times and is at risk for more hip dislocations because of severely deteriorated muscle tissue.
