BGOV Bill Analysis: S. 331, Fentanyl Analogue Permanent Ban (1)

Fentanyl-related substances — which are chemically similar to pharmaceutical fentanyl — would be permanently classified as Schedule I drugs under the Controlled Substances Act by S. 331.

The measure would also modify registration processes for research activities with controlled substances.

The Controlled Substances Act regulates certain drugs that pose a risk of abuse and dependence, and classifies drugs over five “schedules.” Schedule I drugs, which are subject to the most stringent controls, are defined as having the highest potential for abuse and no currently accepted medical use.
