Baby Food, Formula Safety Get FDA Focus in Biden Budget Request (1)

The Food and Drug Administration’s oversight of heavy metals in baby foods and contamination of infant formula would get a funding boost under President Joe Biden’s budget released Thursday.

The proposed fiscal 2024 budget includes $87 million for food safety activities—$64 million above the fiscal 2023 enacted level. The funds would go toward bolstering “FDA’s ability to ensure that food is safe, particularly for infants and children,” according to a briefing document from the White House’s Office of Management and Budget. Part of this would include “investments in FDA to protect infants and children from toxic metals in food.”
