Anthem Faces Class Action Over Prosthetic Device Coverage

A lawsuit accusing Anthem Inc. of wrongly failing to cover certain microprocessor-controlled prosthetic devices is now a class action covering about 40 people, according to a ruling by a federal judge in Los Angeles.

The lawsuit accuses Anthem of refusing to cover computerized prosthetic devices for feet and ankles on the grounds that they’re not medically necessary. Judge Otis D. Wright II of the U.S. District Court for the Central District of California certified the case as a class action on Wednesday, four months after Anthem said it didn’t oppose class certification.
