Anthem Extends Termination Date for Planned Cigna Merger

Anthem Inc., awaiting the outcome of a U.S. antitrust challenge to its planned $48 billion merger with rival insurer Cigna Corp., said it extended the combination’s termination date through April 30.

Additional time will be needed to consummate the merger regardless of the outcome of the lawsuit, Anthem said Jan. 19 in a filing with U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Justice Department, saying that the deal would harm patients and care providers, presented final arguments to a U.S. district judge earlier this month in the suit that will determine whether the tie-up can proceed. Anthem had an option under ...
