Abortion Lawsuit Costs Mississippi Over $750K in Fees, Expenses

Mississippi must pay over $750,000 in attorneys’ fees and costs to an abortion provider that won an order blocking the state from enforcing a law requiring physicians who perform abortions to have hospital admitting privileges.

Jackson Women’s Health Organization can collect the money under the fee-shifting provisions of the federal civil rights law under which it sued the state in 2012, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi said Feb. 1.

The award fell short of the more than $1.1 million sought, but set the hourly rate for the two most-experienced attorneys in the action at $550. ...
