The US State Department has approved a potential foreign military sale to design and build infrastructure for Peru’s main naval base, which is located less than 50 miles from a Chinese-owned port.
The proposed sale, valued at up to $1.5 billion, is subject to congressional review and could require lengthy negotiations between the Peruvian government and potential vendors. The final contract value may be lower than the maximum amount approved by the State Department.
