Prison Is Protecting Contract Fraudster From Covid-19, U.S. Says

A 75-year old man convicted for contract fraud should continue serving a nearly six-year sentence despite a Covid-19 outbreak at his North Carolina prison, federal prosecutors told a court.

William Whyte, despite his status as a cancer survivor, isn’t entitled to a compassionate release because he is in “good health” and has received “extraordinary” medical care at the prison, they told the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia Wednesday.

His request overlooks the extensive precautions the Bureau of Prisons is taking in response to Covid-19, they said.
