The Agriculture Department will boost its oversight of organic products to limit “organic fraud” that can crop up in long supply chains, in one of the biggest-ever changes to the program.
A long time in the making, the rule set to publish Thursday was first proposed in 2020 to strengthen USDA enforcement of organic certification. The USDA “certified organic” label means businesses used a set of guidelines, such as nixing most synthetic fertilizers and pesticides, in producing their food.
