Optum Shows Errors in Coventry’s $614 Million Pharmacy Award

The Department of Labor improperly awarded a $614 million contract to Coventry Health Care Workers’ Compensation Inc. to provide pharmacy benefits management services, the GAO said.

The department should amend its solicitation to reflect actual requirements and make a new award decision after reviewing revised bids, the GAO said in a decision released Thursday.

Protester Optum Workers’ Compensation Services of Florida showed that the department credited Coventry’s bid for offering full-scale drug utilization review services even though the solicitation called for such services only in cases where patient safety was at issue, the GAO said.
