A 75-year old man convicted for defrauding the government under contracts to provide trucks for use in Iraq asked a federal court for a “compassionate release” due to a prison outbreak of Covid-19.
The Butner prison complex in North Carolina where William Whyte is incarcerated has over 200 inmates with the virus, a public defender told the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Virginia Monday.
Whyte should be released because he has less than two years remaining on his sentence and is a cancer survivor with a compromised immune system, the public defender said.
