US Accuses George Mason University of Violating Civil Rights Law

The Trump administration said Friday that George Mason University in northern Virginia had fallen afoul of federal anti-discrimination law and gave the public institution 10 days to “voluntarily resolve” the issues.

The US Education Department announced in a statement that an investigation, begun on July 10 in response to complaints from some Mason professors, found that the university violated Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act by “illegally using race and other immutable characteristics” in hiring and other practices, and that diversity, equity and inclusion policies adopted in 2020 led to preferential treatment in hiring and promotion for faculty ...
