UPS Looks to Retail for New CEO Amid Shifts Caused by Amazon (1)

United Parcel Service Inc. named longtime director Carol Tome as its new chief executive officer, replacing David Abney in a surprise move as the courier grapples with e-commerce growth that has upended the package-delivery industry.

Tome, the former chief financial officer at Home Depot Inc., will become UPS’s 12th CEO and the first woman to hold the top job at the 113-year-old company. Abney, 64, who started as a package loader in a 46-year career at UPS, will step down June 1 and serve as executive chairman through September, the Atlanta-based company said Thursday.
