Daniel Alegre faced a test the moment he arrived as chief executive officer of Spanish-language broadcaster TelevisaUnivision Inc. a year ago: The company was about to air a town hall with Donald Trump.

The Republican candidate for US president was promising the biggest-ever crackdown on illegal immigration and had already pulled out of network debates, accusing CNN and ABC of bias. The Univision network’s town hall would be among the last chances for viewers to see the candidate take questions from voters before the Nov. 5 election.
