SEC Gets New Call to Mandate Corporate Climate Disclosures

The SEC should require companies to report their risks from climate change, according to a new report from a think tank and an environmental group that question the effectiveness of voluntary disclosures.

Guidance on voluntary disclosures the Securities and Exchange Commission issued in 2010 hasn’t led to “comparable, specific, and decision-useful” climate-risk reporting from companies, the New York University School of Law’s Institute for Policy Integrity and the Environmental Defense Fund said in the report released Thursday.

Existing disclosure frameworks and standards that don’t have the force of SEC rules aren’t sufficient either, they said.
