Nippon Steel Corp.’s president said differing interpretations may arise over the US government’s authority tied to its golden share in United States Steel Corp., after reports that Washington invoked the special right to block the shutdown of a plant.
The powers defined under the takeover agreement with the US could be subject to differing views, President Tadashi Imai said at a press conference in Tokyo on Thursday. Still, Imai emphasized that Nippon Steel aims to strengthen US Steel’s competitiveness through planned investments, which in turn would help preserve employment.
