Mercedes-Benz Reported to Police in Denmark Over Greenwashing

Mercedes-Benz Group AG’s unit in Denmark was reported to the police by local authorities for misleading consumers about its green credentials, in the Nordic country’s latest move to clamp down on alleged greenwashing by carmakers.

Denmark’s consumer ombudsman said Mercedes-Benz breached the marketing law when using phrases such as “Certified environmentally friendly” on its website, given it doesn’t have the required certifications. Statements such as “The Green Revolution” and “Mercedes-Benz begins CO2-neutral production” also made its cars appear less environmentally harmful than they are, the ombudsman said in a statement.
