JBS Confirms Report It Bought 8,785 Cows From Illegal Farms (1)

JBS SA, the world’s largest beef supplier, confirmed a report that the company bought thousands of cattle directly from illegally deforested farms in the Amazon, saying it was a victim of fraud and admitting its employees were involved.

Between 2018 and May 2022, JBS received 8,785 animals from three properties in Rondonia state owned by Chaules Volban Pozzebon, dubbed the largest deforester in Brazil who is in jail for alleged illegal timber extraction, or his family, according to a report published Thursday by Greenpeace and Reporter Brasil, an independent research group focused on environmental and labor issues.
