HCA Healthcare Inc. shareholders on Thursday voted against a proposal calling on the company to take a closer look at how its business could be harmed by disputes over how state abortion policies are applied by its doctors.

The bid, filed by United Church Funds, a religious investing organization, asked for a public report detailing the risks posed by state laws that restrict abortions during medical emergencies.
