Groups Ask Court to Halt Commercial Fishing in Ocean Monument

President Donald Trump illegally allowed commercial fishing in a marine national monument off the Massachusetts coast—violating the main purpose of the ocean reserve, three environmental groups claim in a lawsuit filed Monday.

The groups, led by the Conservation Law Foundation, are seeking an injunction against Trump’s February proclamation allowing commercial fishing in Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument, which President Barack Obama created in 2016 to protect the area’s uniquely diverse sea life from fishing.

Only Congress has the constitutional right to reverse the provisions of a presidential monument proclamation made under the Antiquities Act—not Trump, the groups argue. ...
