Democratic lawmakers Thursday launched an initiative to shape policy aimed at slowing the environmental damage caused by fast fashion and mounting textile waste pollution.
The caucus, led by Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-Maine), will focus on encouraging the apparel industry to reuse, repair, and recycle textiles. The group is concerned about the lack of recycling infrastructure for clothing and aims to promote the use of more sustainable fibers like hemp and wool. Pingree founded the caucus along with Reps. Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), Marie Gluesenkamp Perez (D-Wash.), Sydney Kamlager-Dove (D-Calif.), and seven other Democrats.
