The EPA on Thursday proposed to give Louisiana the authority to run its own coal ash program, which would make the state the sixth to regulate the waste under President Donald Trump.
The move is part of the White House’s broad effort to divest regulatory power from the federal government and hand it over to the states. Supporters of the cooperative federalism model say local authorities are best able to make decisions that fit their states, but critics argue that some states don’t prioritize environmental protection as much as they should.
