ConEd Power Outages Lead De Blasio to Propose a Takeover (1)

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio proposed that the government take over Consolidated Edison Inc., the investor-owned utility that serves the most-populous U.S. city, after a weeks-long series of equipment malfunctions and heat-related power failures knocked out electricity for tens of thousands residents and offices.

“We don’t depend on a private company for water or for policing or for fire protection,” de Blasio told a Brooklyn news conference July 22, after a record-breaking weekend heat wave in which at least 50,000 Con Ed customers lost power. “If they can’t handle the job, it’s time to look at new alternatives.”
