California Appeals Board Diversity Judge’s Ruling Against Law

California has contested a federal judge’s ruling that the state’s corporate board diversity law aimed at helping underrepresented communities is unconstitutional.

California Secretary of State Shirley Weber is appealing the May ruling Senior Judge John A. Mendez of the US District Court for the Eastern District of California made against the 2020 statute, known as AB 979, according to a notice filed Thursday. The US Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit will rule on the matter.
