Boeing Co.’s next leader Kelly Ortberg faces a mountain of challenges that stand in the way of his mission: restoring lost swagger at the US airplane manufacturer after years of operational stumbles and financial losses.

Among the first tasks for Boeing’s next chief executive officer: averting a potentially crippling strike in September, and refocusing an executive suite that’s been insulated from the factory floor by layers of management. Ortberg will need to install his own leadership team before tackling a sweeping reorganization, analyst Ken Herbert of RBC Capital Markets said in an interview.
