EnergyAustralia, one of the country’s largest electricity suppliers, admitted Monday it misled customers about the use of carbon offsets to neutralize harmful fossil fuel energy.
EnergyAustralia settled just before hearings began in Australia’s first case testing ‘carbon neutral’ claims made by a company, which was filed in 2023 by advocacy group Parents for Climate.
Carbon offsets “do not prevent or undo the harms caused by burning fossil fuels for a customer’s energy use,” the company said in a statement.
