Anthropic Says ‘Fair Use’ Dooms Authors’ AI Copyright Lawsuit

Anthropic PBC asked a California federal judge to rule that training its artificial intelligence model on books is “fair use” under copyright law and doesn’t infringe the rights of a group of authors suing the Amazon.com Inc.-backed company.

The startup argued that its use of the authors’ books to train its model counts as fair use because it’s “transformative in the extreme,” according to a motion filed Thursday in the US District Court for the Northern District of California. Anthropic’s motion echoed one filed Monday by Meta Platforms Inc., which faces a similar lawsuit from authors.
