The US Fish and Wildlife Service will determine by October of this year if the Crater Lake newt should be listed as an endangered or threatened species as part of a settlement reached with an environmental group.
The agency filed the stipulated agreement in the US District Court for the District of Oregon on Wednesday in the lawsuit brought by the Center for Biological Diversity. The group alleged FWS failed in its requirement to publish a finding within a year of receiving a petition to list the species.
