Federal contractor Weston Solutions Inc. and the Navajo Nation have agreed to settle claims over a major mine blowout in New Mexico, and asked a federal judge to stay the case until the deal can be finalized.
The 2015 blowout released of millions of gallons of contaminated water into the Animas and San Juan rivers. New Mexico, the Navajo Nation, and individual plaintiffs sued Weston, the US Environmental Protection Agency, and other organizations, claiming that EPA contractors triggered the release of more than 3 million gallons of wastewater and sediment from the Colorado mine while investigating the site.
