Western Balkan Countries Counter European Trend to Dump Coal

Countries in the Western Balkan Mountains are defying Europe’s overall trend of decommissioning coal-powered plants, not only by keeping their existing coal-powered plants in operation, but also by developing new ones.

At least nine plants in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and Kosovo are scheduled to be built over the next several years, with energy independence and local jobs cited as the projects’ main goals, said the nonprofit CEE Bankwatch Network.

An additional 15 plants are already in operation across the region, according to United Nations Environment, a figure that also includes North Macedonia and Albania.
