Washington, the first state to prohibit “forever chemicals” in food packaging, is seeking input from companies as it takes steps to enforce the ban.
In 2018, Washington Gov. Jay Inslee signed a bill making Washington the first state to ban PFAS from food packaging. Before the law takes effect, however, the Ecology Department must show there are alternatives to PFAS packaging on the market that perform as well or better. Once that report goes through a peer-review process it will go to the state legislature, and the ban will take effect in 2022.
