Environmental authorities in northern Chile have been given a month to propose measures to protect an endangered seabird that lives largely in Mejillones, a port city where a logistics company is planning to build a warehouse for the mining industry.
Industrial development around Mejillones has expanded rapidly to serve mines inland that produce almost a fifth of the world’s copper. The area also is home to the largest remaining colonies of Peruvian terns.
