VW’s $10B Settlement With Diesel Owners Survives Legal Challenges (Corrected)

Volkswagen’s $10 billion settlement covering owners and leaseholders of nearly half a million vehicles containing devices to cheat diesel emissions tests remains intact, a federal appeals court ruled July 9.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit dismissed challenges against the portion of the government’s $14.7 billion settlement with Volkswagen that includes buybacks, lease terminations, and repairs.

Under the terms of the 2016 settlement, owners and leaseholders were given the option of selling their cars back to VW, terminating their leases, or having their vehicles repaired. If they chose to get the repairs, the owners also received ...
