Virginia Governor Signs Bill to Lower Harm From Sludge With PFAS

A new Virginia law to protect farmers and the food supply from PFAS in treated sewage sludge spread on farm fields and other lands will be effective July 1.

Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger (D) signed the legislation, HB 1443, Monday.

The law requires treated sludge, or biosolids, be tested starting Jan. 1, 2027, to determine the concentration of two specific and concerning types of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS): perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS).
