Verso Corp. to Pay $1 Million to Settle Maryland Pollution Case

Verso Corp. will pay more than $1 million to settle claims that its improper handling or disposal of waste led to toxic contamination in the Potomac River, according to a consent decree approved by a federal judge in Maryland on Thursday.

A byproduct of the paper-making process known as black liquor was seeping from the company’s now-closed paper mill into the river, according to the complaint filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland.
