US Unveils Program Aimed at Expediting Advanced Reactor Designs

The US is soliciting applications from nuclear companies seeking authorization from the Energy Department to develop advanced reactor technologies outside of the national laboratories where such research typically occurs.

  • Program is aimed at expediting testing of nuclear technology, according to DOE statement Wednesday
  • US companies must apply to program by June 27. Energy Department will consider designs with “reasonable chance” to be operational by July 2026
    • DOE expects to approve at least three reactor designs
  • US won’t provide funding. Applicants responsible for costs to design, manufacture, build, operate and decommission reactors
