US to Buy Enriched Uranium to Wean Off Nuclear Fuel From Russia

The Biden administration intends to award funding to two or more US uranium enrichment facilities to help the country’s nuclear industry wean off dependence on Russian fuel.

The Energy Department’s request for proposals, shared in advance with Bloomberg Law, is designed to spur expansion of US uranium enrichment capacity, and promote diversity in the market and a reliable supply of commercial nuclear fuel. Russia is the largest foreign provider of enriched uranium, supplying about a quarter of the uranium used in US reactors, according to Energy Department data.
