Members of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission told senators in a Wednesday hearing that they’re concerned about major reductions in agency staff as its workload continues to increase.
The hearing before the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, focused on the NRC’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2027, comes as the Trump administration continues to encourage the build-out of the nuclear industry to meet energy demand.
“Just in the past 16 months we have lost 510 employees, including many senior executives and subject matter experts, while adding only 59 new staff,” said NRC Commissioner Bradley R. Crowell.
