US Energy Officials Back Renewable Projects on Former Mine Lands

Pennsylvania’s largest solar project—planned for 2,700 acres of former coal mining land—will get a share of $475 million in clean energy funding awards to be announced by the Biden administration Thursday.

The program, established by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law of 2021, is intended to back projects on current mine sites and former mine lands. The Mineral Basin Solar Project in western Pennsylvania joins four other projects in West Virginia, Kentucky, Arizona, and Nevada aimed at increasing efficiency, lowering emissions, and providing jobs for mining-dependent regions.
