Uber Technologies Inc.‘s arguments about its role in protecting passengers and ability to prevent harm won over one jury and could prove potent as it looks to fully escape liability for sexual assaults by its drivers.

A 12-person jury for the California Superior Court, San Francisco County returned a verdict on Tuesday in favor of Uber in a case involving the 2016 sexual assault of a first-year college student in California who alleged her Uber driver, Farrukh Kazim, forcibly kissed and groped her while she was getting a ride to the airport.
