More than 38 million acres of arid land could be logged to help cut the risk of wildfires under a sweeping program that aims to reshape ecosystems in six Western states.
The Bureau of Land Management will issue a draft environmental review of a program to reduce wildfire fuels and restore livestock grazing land, according to a Federal Register notice scheduled for Friday publication.
It calls for possibly logging millions of acres of pygmy pine and juniper forests, controlling the spread of flammable invasive grasses, such as cheatgrass, and restoring sagebrush habitat for the greater sage-grouse.
