U.S. Must Weigh Climate in Oil Leasing After Ruling, Lawyers Say

A district court ruling this week tossing out ConocoPhillps’ leases for an oil and gas project in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska signals that the U.S. government needs to start factoring climate change into fossil fuels decisions, attorneys say.

The decision focuses on a large oil drilling project so subject to the ravages of oil-driven climate change that it will require “chillers” to freeze the thawing tundra to protect drilling rigs from damage. ConocoPhillips had planned to produce 590 million barrels of oil over 30 years there.
