A Trump-era pork inspection rule doesn’t violate industry health standards, a federal judge ruled, finding that the Department of Agriculture attempt to speed up slaughter lines for more efficient processing wasn’t arbitrary or capricious.
Three nonprofits sued the US Department of Agriculture in January 2020 over the Modernization of Swine Slaughter Inspection rule, which was finalized in October 2019. The measure eliminates slaughter line speed limits at some companies and reduces federal oversight by replacing USDA inspectors with company-employed inspectors.
