The Trump administration removed the EPA’s top children’s health official as part of a politically-motivated effort targeting senior executives who disagreed with top officials, witnesses told a federal administrative court this week.
The removal of Ruth Etzel, a pediatrician, as director of the Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Children’s Health Protection in 2018 sparked congressional inquiries and outrage by other pediatricians and scientists who’d long worked with her.
The allegations were found unsubstantiated, yet then the agency cut Etzel’s pay and demoted her.
